Hard Reset the iPhone 8
If your iPhone 8 is frozen or not responding you may need to hard reset it. This is a button combination that forces your iPhone 8 to restart. It’s like holding the power button on your computer.
This is helpful when an app freezes or the iPhone 8 won’t respond to your taps or home button presses. This will not erase your iPhone and the only data you may lose is the last few changes you made in a app before the iPhone froze.
Apple switched to a new home button with the iPhone 7 and keeps it on the iPhone 8. If you are upgrading from the iPhone 6 or iPhone 6s, you can’t use the same button combination to hard reset the iPhone 8.
How to Hard Reset the iPhone 8
To force reboot the iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus, you no longer touch the home button. The home button isn’t a physical button so it may not be responsive either. You need to learn a new shortcut to hard reset the iPhone 8.
- Press Volume Up and release
- Press Volume Down and release
- Hold the Power Button for about 5-10 seconds
After five or so seconds the phone will reboot and you will see the Apple logo on screen. The iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus should then reboot in under a minute and show you the home screen so you can get back to using your iPhone.
You will need to enter your passcode on the iPhone 8 before you can get back in, even if you use Touch ID. This does not remove the apps and it will not delete photos, texts or anything like that. If you were typing an email or a note, you may have lost the last part of something you wrote, so it is a good idea to wait a little while if you can.
If the iPhone 8 freezes constantly, and while you are using the same app or doing the same action, you should re-install that app or check for updates to see if it works better afterwards. You shouldn’t need to hard reset the iPhone 8 very often. If that happens, you should use your iPhone warranty and go see a Genius at Apple about the problem.
